Hughes Stadium Ballot Initiative

I support the citizen grassroots ballot initiative to keep  the former Hughes Stadium area as a green space and part of Fort Collins natural areas.

Located at the base of the foothills, it begs to be included in Fort Collins natural areas.

If developed, this gem will be lost to future generations.

Plastic Bag Ballot Initiative

This is the first step in trying to control the use of single use plastics in our community.

Americans throw away 100 billion plastic bags annually. That’s about 307 bags per person! All that waste can be eliminated by switching to reusable shopping bags.

This is good for the community and good for the environment..

Homelessness

Criminalizing the Homeless

Every year, police in Fort Collins write hundreds of tickets to poor and homeless people for the “crime” of sitting, sleeping, or resting in public spaces.  All of these activities are a  consequence of being homeless.

Criminalization harms people and wastes resources, while moving us further from real solutions.

I will work towards collaborating with the police, non-profit organizations in the community, and the homeless population to ensure that homelessness is not a crime.

Affordable Housing

Affordable housing is a need which continues to grow in our community.  More development won't solve the problem.  We need additional alternative solutions.

The city could aid homeowners by providing help, through  rebates and with design assistance, to incorporate rental units into their homes.  This takes advantage of existing infrastructure and is a more sustainable solution.

To accomplish this, restrictions in the land use code should be re-examined and changed to allow higher density areas.

Affordable Child Care

Affordable Child Care is essential for a diverse, healthy workforce.

The long-term effects of quality early education is well documented, but many can't afford the steep price.

In the 2020 election, Portland overwhelmingly passed a ballot initiative which would provide free pre-school for all 3 and 4 year old children.

Fort Collins should consider a similar initiative.

In the wake of the pandemic, homelessness will continue to be an issue in Fort Collins.

There are many non-profit organizations in our community struggling to meet the needs of this disadvantaged population.

As a City Council member, I will work to ensure these organizations can provide the necessary services.
